Whether it’s the longer hotter summers or the drier winters; whether it’s the water company leaks or the unreasonable demand, water is at a premium. And it could be at a premium price if we don’t do something about it.

Compulsory water metering is the price we’re already beginning to pay for our collective thirst. Whilst potentially costly, metering doesn’t have to be the “tax on family life” that its critics have called it. Indeed, it could actually cut your bills; and whether you’re metered or not, it really is quite easy to keep your water costs down.

The truth is: we use about 150 litres of water every single day. (Bear in mind that about half of that equates to a regular bath and you might want to consider implementing one little saving initiative straight away!) Just don’t fritter away the savings with extended sessions in your power shower!

We waste a lot more water in the bathroom too. Leaving the tap running when we’re brushing our teeth wastes about five litres a minute. So assuming you brush for the regulation two minutes, that’s another ten litres down the drain!

We’re keen to save energy here, as well as water, so make sure you only use the minimum amount of water when cooking vegetables. It saves power! And while we’re in the kitchen, don’t forget to wash your vegetables and fruit in a bowl; you can use the remaining water on your plants. They’ll appreciate the attention, but your lawn really isn’t bothered one way or the other. It can survive long dry spells quite comfortably. So put away the sprinklers and dust off the watering can instead.
