Remember this simple mantra and you won’t go far wrong: if you’re not using it, switch it off. The cost of the stand-by switch is huge. In order for it to work, some standby power source has to remain active in the appliance at all times, just waiting for the call to action! With a typical power range of between 10 and 15 watts, that works out at about £88 million worth of wasted energy on TV sets alone! Or to put it another way, about 480,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

When you can’t switch it off, turn it down: that applies to thermostats, fridges and freezers; washing machines and dishwashers. Whatever the appliance, make sure it operates at maximum operational efficiency by putting it to minimum use. You don’t have to run the washing machine at maximum temperature to get a bright white finish, and you don’t have to have to tumble dry the clothes if you can just hang them out to dry.

Use your appliances responsibly and look out for the Energy Efficiency Recommendation label on new appliances.

Finally, use your energy efficient appliances wherever possible; microwave it instead of oven cooking it; text it rather than email it; and dim it, don’t dazzle!
